UWC Day 002 – Perfect Day at CocoCay (or on the ship)

Generally stay onboard at CocoCay cause I’ve been many times, and I would rather enjoy some alone time on the ship. In this case, because we’re already under capacity, it was even better, and got to just have a very relaxing chill day without doing much.

Measuring the track

I ended up starting the day after a quick, small lunch by trying to measure the track. I wasn’t convinced that the 6 laps = 1 mile sign made sense (cause it also says 4 laps = 1km, and 5km ~ 3.1m, but doing some basic math, that doesn’t add up…5km is either 20 laps or a little over 18 laps, but there’s some discrepancy there.

I did a quick timelapse with the GoPro…cause why not…warning if you get dizzy….there’s a lot of laps. Turns out according to my Garmin Fenix 5X Sapphire that 1 mile is actually 8 laps….on the dot. BUT, that also didn’t pass the sniff test, cause I was booking it when I was walking, and I passed lap 6 around 15.5 min (which feels about right), but my lap 8 time was over 22 min.

Later on I downloaded the Garmin data to double check, and it does look like the Garmin data gets a little wonky (probably cause it’s not a straight line and turns pretty quickly). Pretty hilarious route though, when overlayed on Google Earth (will post in the data section on working with garmin / geolocation data in a future post).

At the solo mixer, I asked the crew whether they had anything I could use to measure the track….we’re working on it…worst case, I might take one of my 6 foot cables and just measure end to end that way…

Getting back on the court

Haven’t really had time in years(?) to get on the court and get some shots up, and usually there’s a bunch of kids in the sports court, but no one was around, so I ended up shooting for an hour. Was fairly fun, despite it being super windy so the balls being carried any which way, but got a nice workout in. A very small section of the footage below….

Finishing up the unpacking

Finished unpacking as well in the morning, and I am pleasantly surprised by how compact I was able to get everything and how much space I have to work with (and have a working switch…not that I play a ton of games anyway…I did spend 10 minutes loading a Star Wars game for the first time and slashing a bunch of wookies as vader). Also #gobears.

Entertainment Update

A couple movies playing all over today. Caught the first bit of Barbie by the pool while editing photos and getting stuff set up for website and end of year stuff.

Turns out the headliner today is an acapella group called Mo5aic. They were pretty neat, and I was able to snag some fun pics while listening to some fun music. Was shooting and all of a sudden half my screen went blank…turns out there was a couple that had repositioned themselves right where I was shooting…but it made a nice siloutte photo.

During the day, I sat in the centrum doing some editing and research while listening to the piano player and string trio afterward. Videos are on one of my other phones, and haven’t synced those yet…but I’m sure I’ll be back to listen to them on some other day as well!

Food

Food was good, not as good as yesterday, but I still enjoyed it. Had some calimari and tomato soup, beef tenderloin (that was sliced super thin) and then finished it off with some apple crumble with ice cream and carrot cake (carrot cake was much more delish, apple crumble might’ve been sitting out for a sec, cause my ice cream didn’t melt when I put them together…sob sob).

Nightly Tradition

One of my favorite things to do while multitasking on my laptop or phone is to go to the pub or other spots around the ship and listen to the live music while that’s going on. It just so happens that my stateroom is also right above the pub (a couple floors).

I found out today that contrary to what they told me on the last cruise, they do actually carry ciders, so that was a nice surprise. Watched the end of both Monday Night Football games, and they were fun (for me).

Running around the world

Got another run in after watching the game. Was really nice outside. Found a way earlier in the day to export the data from garmin and maybe import them somewhere to visualize all the running. More to come on that (maybe tomorrow).

Vibe Check

4 parts joy

1 part disgust (for the travesty of a game that I watched)

    1. Not bad, its pretty fast so far, but we’re in the Caribbean so that’s to be expected….more remote places it might be slower
