UWC Day 061 – Cabo San Lucas, Mexico – Up Close and Personal with Whales

Awesome day with whales and a little more time on land to relax and reset before some travel days.

Disembarkation

Got up at 9am to get downstairs by 9:15am to get cleared for customs to disembark the ship for a couple days. We were told we had to be there promptly because no one else would be allowed off till we had gone through clearance, but alas, we were not a bottleneck and people were allowed to get off (thankfully).

Officers didn’t show up till 9:45am and didn’t finish getting cleared till 10:30am. I wasn’t particularly in a rush, cause my tour wasn’t till 2:30pm, so no big deal to me. The actual customs process was pretty hand wavy, definitely didn’t need to pack all my stuff (or bring it downstairs….), but better safe than sorry. Was really just like walking through customs at an airport, but also had to pay a $58 fee in cash for…a stamp I guess. I’m mostly just tongue in cheek here. Glad they keep us safe and screen for whatever they’re screening for.

It is a little sad to be leaving “home” for a bit. Mostly because the first segment is coming to an end, and a lot of people I’ve seen around the ship are getting off. Said most of my goodbyes yesterday, but hopefully we’ll be able to keep in touch over the interwebs.

Views from the Serenade

Before I left, did one last lap from the top of the Serenade, to see what the views were of Cabo.

Tour

I headed out around 1pm, and after a quick tender boat ride to shore, I found that we were on the other side of the harbor from our tour, but no worries, since I had to drop all my stuff off anyway, I walked over to my AirBnB and dropped off stuff and then headed back into town for the tour.

The tour itself did NOT disappoint. I actually don’t even really remember when I booked it, but very glad I didn’t cancel. Being on a smaller boat with some close friends I’ve made on the ship (and not like 100 people crammed together on a large boat), was really fun to cruise around and see the whales from VERY close. The marine biologist was really good, and took photos with us too, but I think we all had a splendid time. Saw 3 (or 4) whale breaches from afar, and one really close to the boat. Lots of others, really close to us, and actually some of my new favorite whale shots are ones of the whales with the city and beach in the background (instead of just water).

Some up on a rock and some up and around the pier.

After the Tour

Said bye to friends and the ship and headed off to explore Cabo a bit. Lots of parties happening all over the place, but as I headed to my AirBnB, I realized that I just wanted some peace and quiet, so I ended up heading back out for a little bit of food, and then settling in for the night after a nice long shower, and started reviewing photos and watching some Netflix. My flight isn’t until 2pm tomorrow to LA so I have plenty of time to head into town to wander if I want.
