UWC Day 038 – Cruising around Cape Horn, Chile – The Southernmost Point of the Americas

Windy and cold day cruising past Cape Horn, Chile, but made it safely and now heading back north around the other side of South America. Lots of bird watching and cruising amidst the albatross.

Cape Horn

Because we cancelled the port call yesterday, we have a relatively early / slower arrival to Cape Horn. I went up early to see what was up, not knowing what to expect. i found that it was pretty windy and cold, and the views were mostly gray.

As we got closer though, it started to clear up and we saw a small building, a church, and the famed monument.

The navy ship came out to guide us to see how close we could get to the tip and the pilots are coming onboard with us until a later port (guiding us through the fjords — i think).

Wildlife

There was a couple islands that upon closer inspection had some sea lions and some cormorants on it.

There were also birds everywhere around us. Cormorants (I think) and tons of Albatross.

Moment of Silence

As we were about to leave, the Captain came on the speaker and asked for a moment of silence in honor of those that had lost their lives sailing around the cape, while he read this poem (per a quick google, it seems to be inscribed on or near the monument).

I am the albatross that waits for you at the end of the world.

I am the forgotten souls of dead mariners who passed Cape Horn from all the oceans of the earth.

But they did not die in the furious waves.

Today they sail on my wings toward eternity, in the last crack of Antarctic winds.

Chilean Poet Sara Vial

Also, as if on cue, as the poem was being read, a HUGE swarm of albatross started circling our ship…it was really surreal.

Leaving the Cape

As we left, I went inside, but afterward I noticed the sun had come out and it was a beautiful landscape.

Food

Went to dinner to warm up as well, and had some nice hot tea with dinner. Melon salad which I ate way too quickly for a picture, the tortellini and bananas foster for desert. Went to pub after for a drink and some photo editing.

Vibe Check

5 parts joy – pretty surreal to have gone TO and around Cape Horn…crazy to think about how clear and nice the conditions were for us (relative to normal and the past)

Leave a comment or question if you have any thoughts! Anything you want to know about as we go around the world? Any things you want to share as feedback, or any images that particularly spoke to you. I’ll try to read all of them as time permits!
